Trot Times for May 14, 2014: David Ortiz does it again

David Ortiz just keeps throwing the tater trot records out the window. After Tuesday’s two quick trots, I even thought he was picking things up again. Whoops.

Let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: David Ortiz #1, Boston Red Sox – 30.21 seconds [video]
Eleven home runs so far in 2014, and four have clocked in at more than half-a-minute. In fact, 3 of Papi’s last 7 home runs are in the 30-second club. Is there anything else left to say?

Slowest Trot: David Ortiz #1, Boston Red Sox – 30.21 seconds [video]
The second slowest trot of the day clocked in roughly 3.5 seconds quicker than this Ortiz trot — and it belonged to Papi himself. Jose Abreu, with a 26.19 second trot, was the slowest trotter who wasn’t playing DH for the Red Sox.

On his 30-second trot, Ortiz didn’t touch second base until 15.44 seconds after making contact. In 2010, it took Adam Rosales 15.47 seconds to circle the bases on a home run that cleared the wall at AT&T Park. Even so, it took Papi slowing down into a slow walk for his final three steps to cross the half-minute barrier. It would have been very simple for Ortiz to make this another run-of-the-mill 28- or 29- second trot that we see so often.

Quickest Trot: Hunter Pence, San Francisco Giants – 18.86 seconds [video]
One of two trots to clock in under 20-seconds.
