Tater Trot Tracker: August 12

Home Run of the Day: Ryan Ludwick, San Diego Padres (Trot Time: 19.5 seconds) [video]

There was nothing too special about this home run – it extended the Padres’ lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning. It’s the home run of the day, though, because of the awesome uniforms the Padres & Pirates were wearing in the game. If I could find a picture that I was allowed to use, I’d post it. Instead, you’ll just have to watch the video instead and see what I mean. That’s a sweet pairing (though I love the Pirates’ unis about 25 times more than the Padres’).

Slowest Trot: Pat Burrell, San Francisco Giants #2 – 26.18 seconds [video]

Burrell isn’t usually this slow during his trots, but I suppose we can cut him some slack since this was a grand slam that he hit for his second home run of the day while breaking a tie between the two clubs. It’s a pretty good moment. David Ortiz had the next slowest trot, clocking in at 25.4 seconds. Mike Stanton hit a home run that was initially ruled a triple but was overturned on replay. As always, that trot is not counted.

Quickest Trot: Orlando Hudson, Minnesota Twins – 17.82 seconds [video]

Under 18-seconds and it could have been so much quicker if he hadn’t slowed down to essentially a walk in those last two steps. I guess he’s learning from Marlon Byrd (and he should stop it!). I do like watching these kinds of trots, though, because, even though you know they’re running fast, you have no idea that it’s this fast. The super-quick time just comes out of the blue. A pleasant surprise.

About Larry Granillo

Larry Granillo has been writing Wezen Ball since 2008 and has dealt with such touchy topics as Charlie Brown's baseball stats and Ferris Bueller's day off. In 2010, he got the bright idea to time every home run trot in baseball; he has been missing ever since.
