Trot Times for May 9, 2014

Big night for big flies last night. Jose Abreu clobbered one over the batter’s eye in Chicago (video). Then Todd Frazier bested him by putting one onto the riverdeck out in center field at Great American Ballpark (video). And then there’s…

Hold on, let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds – 22.5 seconds [video]
The camera couldn’t find where this blast to center field from Votto landed, but it definitely had some heft to it. It may not have reached the riverdeck like Frazier’s blast earlier in the game, but it was a walkoff. That’s enough for Home Run of the Day, I’d say.

Slowest Trot: Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles Dodgers – 29.04 seconds [video]
A little bit of a bat-flip and some slower than usual trotting on the basepaths was enough to get Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner hot, as he began yelling at the Dodgers’ right fielder from only steps away. Puig turned and yelled back, but continued walking towards home plate. Without the interruption from Bumgarner, we were looking at a 25-26 second trot from Puig (which would have been one of Puig’s slowest trots in the bigs), but the hurler’s outburst slowed things down considerably.

Honestly, I’m most impressed that Puig never once stopped his advancement towards the plate. Not only does this mean that we get to count his full trot time (any interruption would have invalidated the trot), but it also shows a bit of maturity from Puig. We’ve seen too many arguments recently where a trotter got pulled away from the baselines thanks to some heated words on the field. It was great to see Puig get away from that, even if he did have something to say back to Bumgarner.

Quickest Trot: Mike Aviles, Cleveland Indians – 19.01 seconds [video]
One of only three trots to clock in under 20 seconds.
