Trot Times for May 15, 2014

The new Godzilla movie comes out today, and I’m pretty stoked to see it. As excited as I am for it, though, I know that it will never be as good as the Arrested Development version:

Now let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Edwin Encarnacion #2, Toronto Blue Jays – 23.25 seconds [video]
A pair of home runs on Thursday puts Encarnacion ahead of Toronto legend Ernie Whitt in the club’s all-time home run list. That fact brings up two things. One, Whitt hit a lot more home runs than I thought (132 as a Blue Jay). I would have guessed that Encarnacion passed him years and years ago.

And, two, I have no idea how good of a player Encarnacion is. My only real exposure to E5 is through watching these bombs that he hits everyday (and this one is a great example) so I couldn’t tell you anything about his defense or his on-base abilities. I just know that he has obscene amounts of power — and I’m quite happy with that.

Because, boy, does he have obscene amounts of power.

Slowest Trot: Starlin Castro, Chicago Cubs – 26.61 seconds [video]
Castro pauses for a moment as he waits to see if it will land fair or foul. Even without that pause, though, this could have been the day’s slowest trot. Castro runs it out with very little energy. In Cincinnati, Brandon Phillips trotted home in 25.33 seconds for the second slowest trot of the day.

Quickest Trot: Derek Dietrich, Miami Marlins – 18.8 seconds [video]
Dietrich is still a quick enough trotter to earn this title on a regular basis, but I sure do miss those 16-second trots he used to give us.

About Larry Granillo

Larry Granillo has been writing Wezen Ball since 2008 and has dealt with such touchy topics as Charlie Brown's baseball stats and Ferris Bueller's day off. In 2010, he got the bright idea to time every home run trot in baseball; he has been missing ever since.
