Trot Times for July 6, 2014

The holiday weekend has come and gone and now it’s back to work for all of us. Meanwhile, I saw Snowpiercer over the weekend. Apparently, there is no room for baseball in a post-apocalyptic train-based society. Bummer.

Now let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Marlon Byrd, Philadelphia Phillies – 21.88 seconds [video]
Has anyone noticed that Marlon Byrd has five home runs over the last week and 18 on the season? What’s that about? Maybe someone should get John Lackey’s opinion on it.

Slowest Trot: Yasmani Grandal, San Diego Padres – 25.01 seconds [video]
When you hit a home run in Petco Park, you can’t help but watch it fly, caught up in the wondrous beauty of such a rare feat.

One of the slowest trots of the weekend came from a surprising source. Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton was caught behind his pitcher on the bases on Friday and had no choice but to take 27.65 seconds rounding the bases. That’s got to be one of the slowest trots in his entire life.

The absolute slowest trot of the weekend came from Victor Martinez, who spent 29.19 seconds on the basepaths on Thursday.

Quickest Trot: Brooks Conrad, San Diego Padres and Steve Tolleson, Toronto Blue Jays – 19.63 seconds [video and video]
All kidding aside, Conrad hit a home run in only his third game back in the big leagues since 2012. That trot must have felt particularly nice.

The single-quickest trot of the long weekend came from San Francisco’s Gregor Blanco. An always-speedy runner, Blanco went all out on his first trot of 2014.

About Larry Granillo

Larry Granillo has been writing Wezen Ball since 2008 and has dealt with such touchy topics as Charlie Brown's baseball stats and Ferris Bueller's day off. In 2010, he got the bright idea to time every home run trot in baseball; he has been missing ever since.
