Trot Times for April 25, 2014

It’s barely been two weeks since David Ortiz set the record for the slowest (non-injury) trot of the Tater Trot Tracker-era, and he’s at it again. With his blast Friday night in Toronto, Ortiz became the first person to break the half-minute barrier on three separate occasions. That means that, of the seven non-injury-related tater trots to last 30-or-more seconds, Big Papi is responsible for three of them. You can see how Papi compares to history with the new Tater Trot Tracker All-Time Leaderboard.

And if you thought David Ortiz had a real handle on the slowest of trots, just wait until you see the quickest trots leaderboard!

Now let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Jose Abreu #2, Chicago White Sox – 22.49 seconds [video]
I don’t know if this is the second or third walkoff grand slam of the season, but it’s certainly more than I’m used to seeing. That said, it’s also the ninth home run of the season from Cuban rookie Jose Abreu. It’s getting to be that any home run from Abreu is enough to earn Home Run of the Day. One warning: Hawk Harrelson is at his most Hawk in that video call. Watch at your own risk.

Slowest Trot: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox – 30.3 seconds [video]
Papi’s fifth home run of the season and already his second trot longer than 30-seconds. As of today, Ortiz owns the four slowest trots of 2014.

Quickest Trot: Corey Dickerson, Colorado Rockies – 17.88 seconds [video]
Always nice to see a 17-second trot again. It’s the quickest tater trot since Chris Heisey’s grand slam nearly two weeks ago. Well, except for the 17.99 second trot from Yasiel Puig earlier in the same game. Puig’s trot suffered from two things — he slowed down a bit as he approached the plate and the camera angle prevented us from getting a perfect view of when his foot touched home. Without these two points, Puig may have been able to pass Dickerson for the day’s quickest trot.
