Trot Times for April 22, 2014

An Angels fan sitting in center field at Nationals Park yesterday caught Pujols’ historic 500th career home run. A class act, this fan wanted nothing in return for the ball and even helped to get the family of another fan who almost caught the ball in line to meet Pujols after the game. It’s hard not to love a selfless story like that, but I always wonder what I would have done in the same situation. I know I’d give the ball back, but I suspect I’d ask for a jersey or a bat or two. If only I had the chance to test my theory out…

Now let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Albert Pujols #2, Los Angeles Angels – 26.33 seconds [video]
We covered this in depth last night. Five hundred home runs is still a pretty great thing to see no matter how common it’s become in recent years. Even better, though, is that Pujols seems to have reached the milestone while re-finding his stride, as Ben Lindbergh describes. For someone who was on the verge of being one of the greatest players of all time, it’s a welcome sight.

Slowest Trot: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox – 28.06 seconds [video]
Hitting the longest home run in the American League in nearly two years? There’s only one thing to do in a situation like that: strut.

Quickest Trot: Tuffy Gosewisch, Arizona Diamondbacks – 19.31 seconds [video]
Hitting your first career home run on the same night that Albert Pujols reaches #500. That’s got to be a good sign, right?
