Home Run of the Day: Jonny Gomes, Boston Red Sox – 24.36 seconds [video]
It's taken long enough, but someone has finally revolutionized the walkoff celebration. No longer are we forced to sit through a bunch of men jumping up in a circle as their teammate races down the line and drops his helmet. Well, we do have to sit through most of that – but now, thanks to Jonny Gomes' innovation in the nightcap of yesterday's Tampa Bay/Boston doubleheader, we get a nice new addition to it. As Gomes rounded third and raced home to secure Boston's victory, he removed the helmet from his head, held it in front of him and drop-kicked it high into the sky. All while continuing his trot!
Not even Bob Costas could see this as a sign of decline in western civilization. In fact, this is clearly an improvement in civilization. Nice work, Jonny Gomes!
Slowest Trot: Carlos Beltran, St. Louis Cardinals – 25.51 seconds [video]
A laser down the right field foul line that surprised everyone when it remained fair. Beltran wasn't quite ready to run out of the box when we all realized it was a home run.
Quickest Trot: Logan Forsythe, San Diego Padres – 18.83 seconds [video]
One of only three trots to come in under 20 seconds.
