Trot Times for July 28, 2013

Quiet. A master is at work.

Home Run of the Day: Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles Dodgers – 19.11* seconds [video]
Bottom of the 11th inning in a scoreless game. With one swing of the bat, Yasiel Puig grows his legend even more. As the ball sails over the fence, Puig flips his bat in triumph before setting off on this 19.11 second trot. With his teammates surrounding home and waiting to cheer Puig into tomorrow, the Cuban rookie lowers himself into a textbook slide and scores the winning run with dirt on his uniform. (He'd later say that he slid because he remembered an ex-Cuban teammate injure himself by jumping onto the plate.)

For most fans, this combination of baseball fun was a blessing in an otherwise dreary week. For some, however, Puig's bat-toss on his game-winning home run and subsequent slide, again on his game-winning home run, is something to complain about. For those in the latter category, I suggest you stick a few cactus needles under your fingernails because clearly you aren't interested in having fun in life.

Slowest Trot: Jhonny Peralta, Detroit Tigers – 26.42 seconds [video]
This grand slam from Jhonny Peralta beat out David Ortiz for the slowest trot of the day, despite the fact that Papi had just returned from his ejection the day before for destroying a bullpen phone with his bat.

Chicago pitcher Travis Wood hit his third home run of the season. His trot clocked in at a speedy 21.51 seconds.

Quickest Trot: Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins – 18.69 seconds [video]
One of four trots to come in under 19-seconds. None were able to stand out from the crowd, however (though Colorado's Corey Dickerson did hit his first career home run and trot home in 18.84 seconds).

About Larry Granillo

Larry Granillo has been writing Wezen Ball since 2008 and has dealt with such touchy topics as Charlie Brown's baseball stats and Ferris Bueller's day off. In 2010, he got the bright idea to time every home run trot in baseball; he has been missing ever since.
