Trot Times for July 10, 2013

Let's get right to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Hanley Ramirez, Los Angeles Dodgers – 26.88 seconds [video]
I usually reserve the Home Run of the Day for the most momentous homer around the league, whether it's a walkoff or a huge blast or what. Sometimes, though, I just have to give it to the trot that I found most enjoyable to watch. For Wednesday, that was clearly Hanley Ramirez. Watch the video. The way he seemed to be purposely moving his legs slower than they should be – as if he was trying to let a four-year-old win a footrace without making the little kid suspicious – I was certain that this trot was destined for 30 seconds. Somehow, though, it came in at only 26.88 seconds, the third slowest on the day and two full seconds slower than number one. It may not have been as slow as Big Papi, but it was still a lot more fun to watch.

Slowest Trot: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox – 28.91 seconds [video]
With this trot, Ortiz now has 8 of the 10 slowest trots of the year in only 19 trips around the bases! Baltimore's Nolan Reimold should be thanking for Papi. For some reason, Reimold took 28.37 seconds on his towering pop up down the left field line. The ball took a long time to finally settle on the fair side of the pole and, considering how long the full trot took, Reimold must have stood there waiting the whole way.

Quickest Trot: Brendan Ryan, Seattle Mariners – 16.63 seconds [video]
Brendan Ryan showed Papi what a quick trot looked like later in the game. Ryan is probably the most underrated quick trotter in the game. Adam Rosales, Chris Heisey, Bryce Harper and a few other names always pop up when I talk about quick trots, but Ryan is nearly neck-and-neck with Rosales and Heisey for the full crown. Always love to see him in the books.

About Larry Granillo

Larry Granillo has been writing Wezen Ball since 2008 and has dealt with such touchy topics as Charlie Brown's baseball stats and Ferris Bueller's day off. In 2010, he got the bright idea to time every home run trot in baseball; he has been missing ever since.
