Two inside-the-park HRs for July 8, 2015

The Tater Trot Tracker has been in a holding pattern for a few days while I try to get my bearings after the holiday weekend, but there’s nothing like a pair of inside-the-park home runs in the same game to wake it up! Let’s get right to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Logan Forsythe, Tampa Bay Rays – 16.01 seconds [video] and Jarrod Dyson, Kansas City Royals – 14.56 seconds [video]
How often do teams hit two inside-the-park home runs in the same game? I mean, since the 1930s, at least? Even better, how often does one inside-the-parker lead so directly to the other?

Usually, when we celebrate an inside-the-park home run, what we’re really celebrating is some kind of misplay by an outfielder. Every now and then, though, our inside-the-park celebration turns into a sad recognition of an injured player on the field. In Logan Forsythe’s case, it was the latter, as Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon writhed on the ground after pulling up lame in an attempt to catch Forsythe’s fly-ball. Forsythe scored as the ball went unfielded, but there was no joy on either side of the diamond.

After being carted off the field, Gordon was replaced by Jarrod Dyson. A few innings later, Dyson lofted his own flyball to left. This time, the ball was misplayed – not once but twice! – and Dyson hustled around for a quick 14.56 second trot home.

Slowest Trot: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox – 25.79 seconds [video]
I know, I know. Papi had the slowest trot of the day and it was only 25-seconds long? How disappointing.

Quickest Trot: Jarrod Dyson, Kansas City Royals – 14.56 seconds [video]
The quickest trot, outside-the-park edition, also came in the Kansas City game, with Lorenzo Cain clocking in at 19.9 seconds.
