Trot Times for April 23, 2014

Apparently the players in the Giants/Rockies and Orioles/Blue Jays tilts were afraid that I didn’t have anything to do because the batters unloaded for 16 home runs between those two games (nearly half of the day’s 34 dingers). I suppose it was rather kind of them, though you couldn’t ask for two more disparate ballparks to watch a bunch of home runs fly in than the Rogers Centre in Toronto and Coors Field in Denver.

Well, let’s get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Hector Sanchez #2, San Francisco Giants – 25.36 seconds [video]
Chris Davis had a good case for Home Run of the Day, with his blast to dead-center in Toronto that landed in the upper bar area at the Rogers Centre, but an 11th-inning, go-ahead grand slam from San Francisco’s backup catcher — his second shot of the day — is pretty tough to pass up. It helps that Sanchez had a little bit of style as he watched that ball sail into the bullpens.

Slowest Trot: Hanley Ramirez, Los Angeles Dodgers – 27.09 seconds [video]
Ramirez was already slow to begin with before decelerating into a near crawl as he approached home plate. The extra-innings grand slam from Sanchez was the second slowest trot of the day.

Quickest Trot: Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh Pirates – 18.43 seconds [video]
It’s the reigning MVP’s third home run in as many nights and his quickest of the season so far. McCutchen has always been one of the speedier trotters in baseball, so it’s nice to see him getting closer to his roots. Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon, who just keeps hitting home runs, had the second quickest trot of the night at 18.77 seconds.

Larry Granillo has been writing Wezen Ball since 2008 and has dealt with such touchy topics as Charlie Brown's baseball stats and Ferris Bueller's day off. In 2010, he got the bright idea to time every home run trot in baseball; he has been missing ever since.
